Resource – Assessment for Learning Booklet AQA Geography

resourceI’ve previously shared with you all the AfL grids my department and I use with our GCSE students which our students use to assess their understanding of the content before and after the topic. They also enable students to track their progress.

We make use of ‘PPQs’ also known as past paper questions. These are mostly taken from the AQA sample papers but we have also used a number of relevant questions from past papers.

Rather than printing off each set of PPQs as and when required, this year to help our students to become more independent in the learning process I’ve created an assessment for learning booklet.

These booklets contain both the AfL grids and the PPQs which will be completed over the course. Some times PPQs are completed in class, other times for homework.

booklet pages

My plan is that as we cover the content, students can start to answer the PPQs when they are ready to do so. A deadline for submitting the PPQs will be set as we undertake the topic so students have a deadline to work to.

You can download a copy of it by clicking the button below.

Resource – IBDP Geography Case Study Revision Booklets

resourceAfter the success of the GCSE case study and exam question booklets, I’ve set out making similar resources for my IB students. So far the booklet/s consist of case study template sheets. As more sample papers and exam papers become available I will start adding exam questions to the booklets.

The booklets start by outlining the case studies and examples required by the IB specification.

page 1

And they are then followed by a series of case study template sheets for students to complete as part of the review and revise process.

page 12

Eventually exam questions will be added for students to apply their knowledge to.

Resource – Paper 3 Question, Mark Scheme and Answer Advice Match UP

resourceRecently I put together an activity that involved my students looking at AQA paper 3 fieldwork questions, their mark schemes and answer advice. The feedback from the students was resoundingly positive and after some recent requests I thought I’d share it.

The card consisted of 6 questions, 6 mark schemes and 6 answer advice cards.

cards.jpg

Students were given the set of 6 questions from Paper 3, Section B on fieldwork and were asked to try and work out how many marks the question would be worth. Students were thinking about the command terms and the content of the question, their discussions effective at drawing out the purpose of the question.

Next they tried to match the mark schemes to the question.

cards-2.jpg

Finally they added the answer advice cards.

cards-4.jpg

We then went through the questions, the marks available and discussed how to answer them before finally answering the questions for themselves.

Resource – How to Revise in Geography

how to revise

Inspired by Greg Thornton’s post on How do we revise for history? which I recommended in my post on Mrs Humanities shares… 5 Epic History Revision Resources I decided to make a resource for my Geography students.

I’ve taken a slightly different approach, giving a range of approaches to revision but thought it might be useful for others as well.

At the bottom of the page you can download a version for GCSE and IB Geography.

Resource – Describing routes using maps

resourceThis resource is one I created during my PGCE back in 2010-11 and I think I’ve used it with year 7 every year since. It’s one of those resources that is always applicable.

It’s quite a simple activity. Students are given a map, key and task sheet.

The task sheet provides a cops and robbers scenario with descriptions being provided by a helicopter overhead. Students have to follow the suspects around the map and fill in the missing information or select the appropriate information from the options provided in order to catch the suspects. The task sheet has been provided as a word document so you can easily amend to suit your students.

Mrs Humanities shares… Subject Specific Teacher Facebook Groups

mrs humanities shares

It was pointed out to me after sharing my last Mrs Humanities shares… post on History Revision Resources that many people share their resources via Facebook groups now instead of other online platforms yet I still speak to people who are completely unaware of this.

In order to inform those that might be interested I’ve collated the variety of Facebook teaching groups in this post to help you find them easily. I imagine this is not an exhaustive list so if you know of others please let me know.

Mrs Humanities shares… 10 Great Geography Revision Resources

mrs humanities shares

It’s that time of year when teachers and students alike start loosing their minds…. the run-up to exam season. In no particular order then…

1 // Geography 5 a day from @Jennnnnn_x

https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/new-aqa-revision-9-1-geog-5-a-day-11742490

A nice set of resources that encourage students to return to their prior learning; easily adaptable and simple to use. These can easily be set as a starter activity or homework.

geog your memory

2 // Revision Clock from @teachgeogblog

https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/revision-clock-11141536

Whilst this resource is not content specific, it’s a simple way to revise. The template breaks an hour down into 12×5 minute slots.  Students revise a sub-topic for 5 minutes, making notes in the appropriate chunk of the clock. When I’ve used this before one challenge has been having the entire hour to complete it, in order to overcome this they actually only spend 50 minutes note taking and 2 of the 5 minute sections they fill with key terms or facts, stats and specifics as they review the content.

3 // Memory Geoggers from @InternetGeog

https://www.internetgeography.net/memory-geoggers/

A take on @Jennnnnn_x  Geography 5 aday (aka as Geog your Memory) there are a growing number of sheets being added on a regular basis.

4 // Revision Pizza with information toppings from @GeoNewbz

https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/revision-pizza-with-information-toppings-11794366

Quite a different approach to revision, the resources provided here help the student to summarise a topic by organising the ‘toppings’ into the correct slice of the pizza with each slice representing a part of the topic. This can be easily adapted to be questions that the students then go on to answer.

5  // Geography Skills 5 minute challenge from @K_M_Campbell

https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/geography-skills-5-minute-challenge-11780484

A range of skill based activities which can easily be used as starters tasks to review prior learning and to develop skills.

6 // Geog your Memory… skills and content based exam questions from @MissASearle

https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/geog-your-memory-skills-and-content-based-exam-questions-11823212

This resource provides students with the opportunity to refine their exam technique and identify gaps in their knowledge for the Eduqas B 9-1 spec. A tracker is included which shows the source of each question so that you or the students can access the mark scheme.

7// Videos from @timeforgeog

https://timeforgeography.co.uk/

A variety of videos on a range of topics, suitable content for all exam boards. You need to sign up to watch the videos but they are free to watch.

8 // A question a day from @Geoisamazing

Paper 1 – https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/new-spec-aqa-a-question-a-day-paper-1-11740889

An easy to amend question a day calendar with questions based on AQA paper 1; good for retrieval practice. Hopefully a paper 2 one might be added in due course.

9 // GCSE Case Study and Exam Question Revision Booklet from @MrsHumanities

https://mrshumanities.com/2018/01/29/resource-gcse-case-study-and-exam-question-revision-booklet/

This is a resource I created recently to support independence in the revision process. Students have a summary template for each case study from the AQA Geography specification and questions that follow. Students fill in the summary templates and use them to answer the questions provided.

10 // GCSE 9-1 Geography Exam Practice Booklet from @MrTomlinsonGeog

https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/gcse-9-1-geography-exam-practice-booklet-11829054

This resource is an adaption of my AQA GCSE Case Study and Exam Question Booklet. Students are provided with the case study information and given questions to apply their knowledge and understanding too.

Hope you find a revision resource of use from the collection.

Resource – AQA Revision Booklet adaption by @MrTomlinsonGeog

gcse revision (1)No to long ago I shared a post with my revision booklet for AQA Geography students to encourage them to take ownership and responsibility of their revision. Mr Tomlinson  got in contact to ask if he could adapt and share the finished the result. I’m all for sharing to reduce the workload of others so said yes.

He’s kindly given me permission to share his version with you.

In this recent adaption you will find information on case studies, scaffolded exam style questions for AQA Geography Paper 1.

Resource – GCSE Case Study and Exam Question Revision Booklet

gcse revision (1)

This has been on my to-do list for a while now. I started it the other week and this evening I managed to crack on and get it complete.

Rather than giving my students the information they need to revise, I want to develop their independence in the revision process so have created blank templates that encourage students to revise the key content for each of the case studies and examples covered in the AQA GCSE Geography course.

The booklet starts with an outline of the required case studies and examples form the specification and identifies the name of those we have studied.

gcse revision first pages

After that each case study or example has a table to complete which enables the student to review their previous learning.

example grid

These are then followed by suitable exam style questions. To support students in developing their extended answers, I’ve included structure scaffolds. These can easily be removed for more able students.

So each section looks something like this…

Resource – IBDP Geography Self-Assessment Sheets

resourceAs part of encouraging learners to take responsibility for their learning, my students are encouraged to make use of self-assessment sheets. The idea behind these sheets comes from my Before and After topic review wheels, which involves students reflecting on their prior knowledge before undertaking the topic and the assessment of their gained knowledge at the end of the topic.

Students are instructed to print a copy of the grid at the start of the topic and to self-assess their prior knowledge in the before column. The content of the grids is directly lifted from the IBDP 2019 Geography Specification, but could easily be amended to suit any exam specification whether it be at KS4 or 5.

coasts

As students work complete the topic, they are given exam style questions from past papers and ones we have written ourselves. After reading their feedback they complete the progress table, set themselves a target and then put the date or page number of the location with evidence that they have met their target and acted on feedback.

In addition students are given a case study and example summary sheet, in order to help students to bring together their understanding of the case studies and examples studied. Students simply have to summarise the key points in their table. Effective for instilling content. summary sheet

Now I do check the self-assessment sheets are used however the summary sheets are a tool to support students in their studies. If they choose not to use it, that is up to them but the support is given.

If you teach IBDP Geography you can find the resources here, to download a blank template for editing to suit other exam specifications click here.

How do you encourage students to reflect on their learning?
